“Don’t come near me or I swear I’ll kill you.”
“Oh, Zinnia!” His voice was like music to her ears. But today she wished she had ear plugs. She had an assignment to do, and Drew was in no way going to help her concentration. Her best friend was a lively guy, constantly making jokes and wanting to have a good time. But there was a time and place for everything and now wasn’t it. She pounded ferociously on the keyboard in front of her, hoping he’d get the hint and walk away. Assignments, she was drowning in them. He got closer and closer, no sign of being discouraged. “What are you doing?”
“Don’t come near me or I swear I’ll kill you.” She raised her left arm as a warning. “I have to finish this paper or dad will kill me.”
“But Zin, all you do is work,” He said. “Can’t you take a break?”
“Breaks mean more rifts. Rifts mean the downfall of our dimension.” She whirled her chair around to face him. “I don’t have time for this right now. I don’t have time for you.”
He frowned. “No time for me? Not even a little? Please?”
“Drew, please,” She pleaded back. “I have to finish this paper. I’m so stressed, I feel like I’m going to explode!” As she ranted, he approached her, a mischievous grin. “Don’t you dare. Step back!” She cried. But it was too late, Drew had pulled her to the floor with him. “Drew!”
“Five minutes. You need a break.” But she wasn’t smiling. No impromptu cuddling session with her best friend today (Who happened to have a girlfriend already, how rude!). She fought him off, but she stopped in her tracks as he started tickling her.
“Drew!” She gasped, through laughs. He was such a playful little…well, she wanted to say shit, but she would never curse. It was improper. She laughed, feeling relief was over her. She did feel a bit better. Drew stopped, pulling her close to his body as they lay on the floor of her study. She felt bad for feeling so good next to him. It felt right. But… “Your girlfriend…”
He held Zinnia tightly. “What girlfriend? The ex one who told me to stop speaking with you? That one that I broke up with a few days ago?”
She felt terrible. What else did she miss in Drew’s life, as she worked tirelessly in this small room? “Drew I’m sorry….”
“Don’t be,” He muttered. “I made my choice. You.”
“I’ll be a better friend. I’ll make time for you and Sonny. I promise.” She hugged him tightly. How the hell could she be so oblivious to everything?
